Walking Aids
Sometimes a little extra stability is all that is needed when walking, while at other times firm support is required with every step. Walking sticks, crutches and walking frames can help with reduced mobility, during recovery after an injury or surgery, as well as for people for whom longer walks are gradually becoming more difficult.
From light support to a stable walking frame
A walking stick provides support on one side of the body and is suitable for users who are still independently mobile but need greater stability when walking. In addition to classic walking sticks, there are also folding versions suitable for travel and sticks with multi-point bases for more stable support.
Crutches allow the lower limb to be relieved to a greater extent. Axillary and forearm crutches are therefore used, for example, during recovery after injuries and procedures, as well as for longer-term mobility difficulties.
If support at one or two points is not sufficient, walking frames and rollators can be used. Fixed walking frames provide the user with stable support with every step, while wheeled models allow smoother movement. Rollators can be equipped with brakes, a seat or storage space, making them suitable for longer outdoor walks where it may be necessary to stop and rest occasionally.
For all walking aids, the correct height and adjustment according to the user's body proportions are essential. An incorrectly adjusted walking stick, crutch or walking frame can lead to unnatural posture and, instead of making walking easier, cause additional discomfort.
